The unseasonably warm weather and lack of snow has led to the cancellation of the 2012 40th anniversary Mora Vasaloppet races.
Sunny skies and high temperatures of 40 degrees in the forecast led the Vasaloppet USA board of directors to their decision. The warm temps will melt what snow remains on the Knife Lake back-up ski course. This week’s forecast also didn’t show any race-saving snowfall.

On Thursday, the students at Hinckley-Finlayson High School held a student assembly for the purpose of promoting positive changes between the students. Principal Brian Masterson was on the ‘First Thing in the Morning Show’ with Mike Hughes on Thursday morning before the assembly was to take place, and he explained some of the unique, kindness-based initiatives that the students are currently considering.

State Senator Tony Lourey made his first call-in of the new legislative session this week to discuss the happenings in St. Paul. Senator Lourey said that the atmosphere at the capitol is “tough,” adding that “we are experiencing a level of partisanship that has never been seen before.”

This week Pine County became the epicenter of one of the biggest stories in the state: the year-long internal investigation by the Pine County Sheriff’s Office caused a lot of questions. As usual, Sheriff Cole was back in our studios and was more than willing to discuss the situation with Mike Hughes and Jesse Logan.

The cast and crew of the PCHS One-Act Play will be advancing to Section Finals for an unprecedented fifth year in a row, following their first place finish Saturday at Sub-Section Festival here in Pine City. Pine City’s comedy, “slasreveR neveS” by Alan Haehnel, can also be seen again by the public in an encore performance this Friday night at 7pm at the Pine City Elementary Auditorium. During the past year the Pine County Sheriff’s Office has conducted eleven Internal Investigations involving 15 Sheriff’s Office employees. These investigations were in response to both internal and citizen complaints alleging misconduct. Reported allegations include: Failure to follow established PCSO Policies and Orders, Failure to perform assigned duties, Sexual Harassment, Domestic Violence, mishandling of property under the control of the PCSO, Excessive Force and Abuse of Authority.

A wild scene developed last night in Babbit Minnesota, about two hours north of Duluth. Authorities have confirmed that a three-year-old girl was stabbed and later, police shot the man suspected of stabbing the little girl.

A Pine City official recently announced his candidacy for Representative in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Nathan Johnson, 34, the city planner and zoning official for the City of Pine City has thrown his name into the hat.
