Final Countdown Begins For 30th Running Of The Beargrease
The final countdown has begun for the start of the 2014 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. The 30th annual Beargrease starts at 1 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 26 at Duluth East High School.
Organizers of this year’s race took the reigns from the previous leadership after the race was announced as cancelled back in Oct. The new leadership team for northern Beargrease came in, quickly announced that the event was back on. That new leadership expressed their hope to restore the struggling race to its former glory when the nearly 400-mile haul along the North Shore of Lake Superior rivaled Alaska’s famed Iditarod in both prestige and prize money.
The previous volunteer board sent shockwaves through the mushing world when it abruptly cancelled the race back in October citing a lack of money. But the old guard handed over control to an upstart team of new leaders made up of professionals who were experienced in running events, advertising, and marketing, and who are passionate about the Beargrease. Pine City High School Graduate Ryan Anderson was the 2011 John Beargrease champion.
