Panthers Too Much for Mustangs at the Dome
The dream season for the Mora Mustangs ended Friday in a 28-0 loss to the three time defending state champion Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers. The Panthers used a 21 point third quarter to earn a trip back to the state championship game.
The Mustangs defense played well all game, with big games from Harley Lindberg, Johnclair Kubesh, and Blake Mendard. Mora held GLS to only 236 yards of total offense, but four turnovers gave the Panthers great field position which they turned into scores.
The Panthers scored on their first drive of the game. Aaron Lueders scored from three yards out, but the Mustangs defense held strong the remainder of the half, and Mora trailed only 7-0 at the half.
The Panthers came out of halftime and took a nine-play drive 65 yards, and Ryan Style picked up an Lueders fumble at the 1 and scored to give the Panthers a 14-0 lead.
On Mora’s next possession, Andrew Youngbloom was intercepted for the second time, setting up Glencoe-Silver Lake with a short field. Panthers quarterback Kyler Anderson hooked up with tight end Cody Christensen for a 19 yard touchdown and Glencoe-Silver Lake went up 21-0.
Mora’s best drive came late in the third quarter, but a Youngbloom pass intended for Nathan Rogalski was tipped and intercepted in the endzone. Youngbloom was picked off once more, and Jorrin Pautz took it back 65 yards for the game’s final score.
Mora ends the year 10-3 and became the first Mustangs team since 1996 to play in the Metrodome.
