State Bound: Mustangs Capture Section Championship
The Mora Mustangs have not been to the state tournament in over a decade, but that drought ended Friday with a 21-7 win over Virginia. With the win, the Mustangs not only claim the section 7AAA title, but also earn a birth in the state tournament.
The Mustangs trailed the Blue Devils 7-0 in the second quarter after a 91 yard touchdown pass from Jordan Krebsbach to Andrew Norri. The score came after one of Mora’s three first half fumbles.
Despite the early troubles, Mora continued to move the ball against the Blue Devils defense and with :26 to play in the first half, quarterback Andrew Youngbloom connected with Traver Fields for an eight yard touchdown to tie the game up at 7-7. The Mustangs started the drive with great field position after Nick Muehlberg picked off Krebsbach for Mora’s second interception of the game.
Coach Randy Qual talks about the importance of the late first half touchdown:
It took Mora a few possessions to get going in the third quarter, but once they did, they never looked back. They gave carries to a handful of running backs. Tyler Jones, Dylan Graves, Nathan Rogalski (who also played some quarterback), Nick Muehlberg, and Preston Carlisle all ran well for the Mustangs.
Mora took its first lead of the night in the third quarter on a 15 yard touchdown run from Nathan Rogalski. Carlisle would add Mora’s third touchdown on a 12 yard run in the fourth quarter.
Senior captain Dylan Graves talks about the complete team effort:
Mora will play on Saturday, November 14th at 3 p.m. at the Public School Stadium in Duluth. Hear the game on Cool Country 100.9 WCMP-FM.
Qual, Graves, Jones, and Youngbloom talk about what winning the section and earning a trip to state means for the team, school and community.
