The season started out exactly the way Pine City’s first year head coach Jared Polzine hoped, his defense stopped Moose Lake-Willow River for a three and out, then the offense drove down the field on their opening possession, capped off with a one yard touchdown run from Junior quarterback Nate Wendorf.  But three plays after the kickoff, the Rebels marched 65 yards and scored on a ten yard touchdown run from Austin Jacobson.  The Dragons missed the extra point after their score, so the Rebels took a 7-6 lead with the point after, never looking back, winning 40-18.

As a team, Moose Lake-Willow River ran for over 400 yards and five touchdowns. Michael Unzen led the charge with 218 yards and two touchdowns.  Jacobson scored twice on the ground, finishing with 105 yards on the night.  He also caught the Rebels only completion, a 29-yard touchdown from Hayden Hoffman.

The Dragons moved the ball well all game, however, a pair of miscues deep in Rebels territory costs them.  In the first quarter, they were stopped on fourth and one inside MLWR’s 25 yard line, then fumbled a pitch from Wendorf to Adam Olson inside the Rebels five yard line just minutes before halftime.

Despite the loss, Pine City got solid production from Wendorf who completed 5-9 passes for 130 yards and two scores.  The first came on  a 21-yard pass to a wide open Mike Schmidt.  Wendorf then connected on a 63 yard strike to Adam Olson, who outran the entire Moose Lake-Willow River secondary.
