The temperature was cold, but the defense was hot. Pine City shutout Minneapolis Patrick Henry 28-0 in round one of the Section 5AAA playoffs. The Patriots were held to -8 yard rushing in the first half.

Pine City’s first score came on a 31 yard run by Haakon Hansen in the first quarter. The touchdown is his 15th on the ground and 17th overall this season.

Taylor Gonyea added a two yard score in the second quarter. He finished the night with 18 yards on three carries.

Justin Carlson finished the first half with a 66 yard touchdown pass from Wes Fischer to give Pine City a 20-0 lead at the half.

Pine CIty added a safety in the third quarter, and Fischer connected with Josh Skalicky on a one yard touchdown pass to round out the scoring.

Pine City advances to play Zimmerman Saturday in Pine City. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Pine City not the only local team advancing out of the 5 AAA bracket. Mora moves on with a convincing 45-12 beatdown of Rockford. The Mustangs move on to play the top seed Holy Family Catholic.

Cambridge-Isanti also advances. They sneak by Anoka 21-10. East Central gets the big 35-0 win over Ely. Braham couldn’t find the endzone, and their season comes to an end in a 6-0 loss to Deer River. Hinckley-Finlayson rolls Mesabi East at home 58-7. Greenway clips Rush City 28-20, ending the tigers season.  Moose-Lake Willow River advances with a 75-8 win over Duluth Marshall.

A season that appears to have no end in sight is that of the Grantsburg Pirates Volleyball team. They come up with the win over luck in straight sets, three games to none. Grantsburg advance to the regional Friday at seven.
