So Close, yet so far, for the Minnesota Twins, whose season comes to an end due to some great defense and one opportunistic swing by a future Hall of Famer. The Twins fall 1-0 to the White Sox in the one game playoff. With the win, Chicago advances to the post-season to face Tampa Bay. The lone run of the game came in the seventh and with Jim Thome at the plate.

The Twins had a chance to score, but Ken Griffey Jr. threw out Michael Cuddyer at home in the fifth. The Twins end the year with a mark of 88-75, still higher than any pre-season projections. The playoffs are now set, and Milwaukee and Philedelphia kicks off their best of five series this afternoon in the city of brotherly love. Also tonight, the Dodgers take on the Cubs and the Angels host Boston in late night action out in Anahei.

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle declared today, “Milwaukee Brewers Day,” in Wisconsin.

The Twins season was decided with an extra day of baseball, the Wild’s preseason contest against ironically, Chicago went into extra minutes. In the end , Stephane Veileux netted the game winner in overtime to give Minnesota the 3-2 win. The Wild improve to 3-1 this preseason. No time to rest though, they host Buffalo tonight, a team they beat Sunday on the road.
