Local Athletes Compete At State Track & Field Meet
On the boys side, several athletes made the finals including Rush City’s freshman Demario Peterkin, who took fifth in the 400m. Peterkin also made state in the 100m and 200m, but didn’t qualify for the finals. Also in the finals were Mora’s 4x200m relay team of Justin Mantel, Max Anderson, Greg Mork and Justin OBert, who earned 4th place with a time of 1:31.49. In Boys long jump, Moose Lake Willow River’s Jon Evenson took 13th.
Boys competing but not making the finals included Moose Lake-Willow River senior Michael Pender, who ran in the 110m hurdles, and the 300m hurdles, the Rebels Ben Moonen in the 800m and the Rebels 4x200m relay team. Mora’s 4x100m team also made State but not the finals. In the field events, Hinckley-Finlayson’s Chris Carlstrom also competed in the shot put.
On the girls side, Mora’s Kaitlyn Lafrance ran in the 300m hurdles and Pine City’s Sherry Rike ran in the 400m although neither made the finals.
Next up for the spring sports season in MSHSL competition is the State Golf Tournament, which will be going off tomorrow and Wednesday at three different courses around the state. Pebble Creek will host 1A, Sand Creek 2A, and Bunker Hills 3A.
