A new state law that goes into effect August 1st, 2014 is attempting to help increase work zone safety on Minnesota roadways.

Motorists who speed through a work zone (reduced speed limits found on orange signage) will now be fined up to $300 with additional ticket surcharges. The measure was approved by the Legislature this past session.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says safety in the work zone is of top priority for contractors, law enforcement and the department.

The increased fine is intended to draw the attention of motorists who drive through occupied work zones.
