DNR Lifts Night-Fishing Ban On Lake Mille Lacs
Mille Lacs Lake is re-allowing night-fishing after a ban was placed earlier this year due to the declining population of walleye.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the lift of the ban will take effect July 21st, at 10pm. The ban was originally scheduled to be in effect until December 1st.
The agency notes fewer anglers have visited the lake this summer, helping form a record-low Walleye harvest in June. The night ban itself, cooler weather, and walleye finding plenty of yellow perch have kept fishermen ashore, lake experts say.
Despite the lift, DNR officials stress the walleye problem has yet to be fully solved on Mille Lacs. The population has decreased in recent years as more walleye hatchlings fail to reach adulthood.
