Packers TE Finley To Undergo Spinal Fusion

Thursday, November 14th, 2013 at 6:48 am

In a statement released by his agent, Packers tight end Jermichael Finley says he has elected to undergo spinal fusion surgery.

The statement said that while it’s been determined that “surgery may not be 100% necessary, it is a proactive measure that should alleviate future risks with regards to a similar episode or re-injury.”

Finley has elected to undergo a spinal fusion with Dr. Joseph Maroon, the Pittsburgh Steelers team Neurosurgeon. Dr. Maroon is experienced in conducting this type of procedure on professional athletes in contact sports, and is confident that Finley will fully recover following the procedure.

Once surgery has been completed, Finley has every intention of resuming his football career, but his ability to do that is in serious question.

Finley faces a long road back. He was injured on a collision against the Cleveland Browns last month and had to be carted off the field. The main objective for the surgery is that Finley can live a normal life outside of football.
