Beargrease Back On?
In a positive turn of events, just a matter of days after learning the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon would be canceled because of a lack of funding, it now sounds like the 30th running of the race will go on as originally planned this winter.
WDIO is reporting that Beargrease board Vice President Geoff Vukelich, who stepped down in Monday night’s board meeting, says the race is back on after a leadership change. He said the board approved the move about five minutes after it was first proposed.
Tone Coughlin, with the NorthShore Inline Marathon, will serve as the interim president. Coughlin told WDIO that a handful of other new people will also take on leadership positions and the group will now work with marketing and advertising professionals to bring in mushers and new money.
Vukelich, who had been on the board for a decade, said he doesn’t care who runs the race as long as it continues. Numbers had been down over the past few years due to weather problems, but at this point it looks like the Beargrease is geeting a much needed lift.
