Rock Creek Family Named 2013 Pine County Farm Family Of The Year
Rys Farms Inc. located east of Rock Creek is the 2013 Pine County Farm Family of the Year. The family includes Tom and Nancy Rys who have been farming for 25 years. This year they brought their daughter Cami and her husband Joe Babolik into the corporation. The Baboliks have three children: Macie age 6.5, Milo age 5, and Melia 1 year old. While Joe and Cami have always helped out in planting and harvest seasons Joe came on the farm full time to ensure future continuation of the operation.
A total of seven people are employed in the operation. Tom is the farmer/general manager and Pioneer Seed sales associate. Nancy is the business office and grain inventory manager. Joe is in charge of soil management and a multi-talented equipment operator. Cami is an accountant in town and assists in farm accounting. Other employees include Tom’s brother John who is the farm mechanic, two truck drivers, a part-time office assistant, and a Pioneer sales associate offering seed treating, crop insurance and Precision Ag sales and service.
The Rys family crop farm operation is 1,500 acres, half in corn and half in soybeans. “We own 500 acres and rent additional acres from farmers who aren’t farming themselves, but who want to keep the land in agricultural use and keep Rock Creek a farming community,” said Tom. They are also a full service Pioneer Sales Agency and run a small trucking company hauling grain and agriculture products.
The Rys Farms also owns and operates the local grain elevator. “We do not buy grain,” said Nancy. “We assist 20-25 area farmers to dry, store and market their grain.”
They are currently expanding their grain storage capacity from 202,000 bushels to 317,000 bushels. “We are fulfilling a need in the area of smaller grain producers for grain storage, marketing and trucking,” added Tom.
Tom and Nancy are very active in their church. They are Farm Bureau members. Nancy is chair of the Rock Creek Planning Commission.
Tom and Nancy are a dynamic and well respected husband and wife team with many years of experience in farm related services. Tom has 30 years of hands-on crop farming experience and is a knowledgeable source for everything from crop varieties to the latest in farm equipment.
Nancy worked many years in the implement business and then progressed to crop management and marketing capabilities as well as dispatching the trucking company. They work together to stay on top of the latest advancements in the agricultural world and gladly share their insights on what’s going on.
Tom and Nancy said that their daily mission is to service the local farmers the way business used to be done – honestly, fairly and neighborly. Yet they know that today’s farmer needs more knowledge and technology than in years past in order to stay competitive.
The Farm Family of the Year is a program of University of Minnesota Extension; the College of Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources; College of Veterinary Medicine and Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station along with Farmfest.
