Updates have emerged on the death of 43-year-old Sonja Ann Smith of Deer River, whose death is now being ruled as a homicide.

The Associated Press reports that an autopsy took place on Thursday, in which multiple traumatic injuries were evident. The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Friday that the case would be investigated as a homicide.

The Grand Rapids Herald says investigators do not believe it was a random attack based on interviews and forensic evidence collected from the scene.

A 911 caller originally reported the deceased woman on Wednesday morning. The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, Deer River Police Department, and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension responded to the scene.

The Sheriff’s office has reaffirmed that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. No suspects or weapons have yet been identified.
