Minnesota’s Prison Population Among Lowest In Nation

Minnesota is among the nation’s lowest when it comes to prison population, according to a newly-released report from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The AP states that statistics within the report show Minnesota is officially ranked 2nd behind Maine in prison population (145 residents per 10,000). Maine sits at 145 per 10,000.

The state’s prison population has remained relatively consistent over the past few decades. The current tally is 9,450 prisoners.

The number of state-by-state prisoners across the country fell by more than 25,000 in 2012, a decline of nearly 1.7%.
