A 63-year-old Burnett County man was apparently attacked by a bear on Monday night. The man, now identified as Jerry Brown, was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in the Twin Cities with serious injuries.

The Inter-County leader reports the black bear attacked Brown after his dog initiated contact with the animal.

The Department of Natural Resources confirmed that the attack happened in Brown’s yard near Shell Lake Monday night about 9:30 p.m.

Brown’s brother was said to have shot the bear at close range and authorities were searching for the bear on Tuesday. The Burnett County Sheriff’s Department says Brown was taken by a private party to the hospital in Shell Lake before being flown to the cities. Brown is reportedly in stable condition, according to the Associated Press.
