WI Man To Face Charges For Lying About Missing Canoeists

Updating a story we reported on from a few weeks back, a man is now being accused of lying about two canoeists disappearing in the Chippewa River. A criminal complaint shows 30-year old Andrew Wallace has been charged with false use of 911 and four counts of obstructing an officer. The complaint alledges Wallace told police he tried to rescue two men who were hanging onto a flipped canoe, but his kayak flipped while he tried to help.

After two days of crews searching the water, police say Wallace admitted that there had been no canoeists in the water, but didn’t give a reason as to why he said there had been in first place.

WEAU reports that between the Eau Claire police, fire, Eau Claire County sheriff’s departments and the Township Fire Department, crews spent more than 200 hours searching, with the fire departments reporting more than $7,500 in resources spent.
