Man Dies After Canoe Capsizes

A 64-year-old Brainerd man is dead and after a canoe he was in capsized on Gull River Sunday afternoon.

According to Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office at 2:12 pm, deputies responded to the report of a capsized canoe and two people in the Gull River.

Residents who live near the river heard a cry for help and responded, pulling a 4-year-old boy, that was in the canoe,  out of the river. He was treated at the scene and was taken to Essentia Health in Brainerd.

The 64-year-old man was pulled from the river by paramedics and law enforcement further downstream. He was unresponsive and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The victims’ identities are being withheld pending notification of family. Both were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

The accident is under investigation.
