Sen. Klobuchar Working On Legislation To Prevent Gas Price Spikes

Friday, May 24th, 2013 at 8:05 am

On Thursday, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar introduced legislation to help prevent spikes in gas prices.

Minnesotans are groaning after the recent surge in prices to back above $4 per gallon. The price increase is supposedly due to the closure of several oil refineries in the Midwest region for maintenance over the last few weeks, an excuse many people have a hard time understanding.

Klobuchar’s legislation would require refineries to report their maintenance schedule to the Department of Energy to prevent simultaneous closures and help avert future shortages.

The Associated Press reports that last week, Klobuchar sent a letter to the Department of Energy urging the Department to thoroughly examine the timing of maintenance operations at the refineries. Her proposed legislation would require refineries to report to the Department of Energy their schedule for maintenance that would bring any refineries off line.
