A wildfire forced evacuations in parts of southern Douglas County and western Bayfield County.

Wisconsin DNR officials told WDIO that the fire started Tuesday afternoon in the Town of Gordon and has been dubbed the Germann Road Fire.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, the fire grew overnight Wednesday to 8,700 acres, but it is nearing 85 percent containment after beginning to slow down around 10 p.m. Tuesday. About 50 structures have been damaged, but thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

A mandatory evacuation was ordered for Barnes Township west of County Highway A and north of County Highway N. Earlier, some residents were evacuated in the Rock Lake, Beauregard Lake, Loon Lake, Murray Lake, and Sandy Lake areas. An evacuation center has been set up at Drummond High School.

Officials are urging gawkers to stay away from the area. WDIO reports the cause of the fire is not yet known.
