Pine County Commissioner Carlson Dies

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013 at 1:42 pm

Longterm State Rep. and current Pine County Commissioner Doug Carlson passed away on Monday, April 22 at the age of 73. His body was found at about 6:30pm by maintenance staff at the Pine County Courthouse. The Sheriff’s office reports that Mr. Carlson had been seen at the facility several hours earlier. An investigation is active, but no criminal activity is suspected at this time.

Prior to his first being elected to public office in 1971, the Sandstone native was a practicing veterinarian and beef farmer when first elected to the state legislature. The Minnesota Legislative Reference Library says that “the former Republican also ran unsuccessfully as the Independent Republican Party endorsed candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives in the 1990 election. His opponent, Rebecca “Becky” Lourey, defeated him by less than 200 votes so an automatic recount should have occurred. However, Douglas W. Carlson waived his right to the recount and she was declared the winner.”

After his nine term stint in the State House, the Republican had a long service on the Pine County Board. Carlson represented Pine County’s Fifth District at the time of his passing.
