John Beargrease Sled Marathon Underway Sunday
After being canceled last year and postponed this year, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon will finally start Sunday afternoon. Riders will make a 375 mile trip that spans from the north shore of Duluth to the Gunflint trail, and back.
On Tuesday, organizers of the event confirmed that the trails are safe and ready for mushers. However, low snow totals will change a few things this year.
WDIO reports that pit stops will most likely be in different places and routes will change a little. Mushers may also opt to race during the night instead of the day to avoid warm weather. Due to last year’s cancellation and this year’s postponement, organizers of the event say that fewer mushers and fewer volunteers have signed up.
The event apparently needed 800 volunteers and only has 300 currently signed up. The race starts Sunday afternoon and wraps up Wednesday.
