A 28-year-old Kelsey man is dead after an his SUV collided with a stopped train, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim’s name is Adam John Sharp. Authorities said he was on his way to work at the time of the crash.

WDIO reports that authorities responded to a reported car/train accident on Arkola Road in Kelsey Township around 6 o’clock Wednesday morning at a BNSF railroad crossing. Kelsey is about 40 miles north of Cloquet.

Apparently the train was stopped with mechanical problems, blocking an intersection.  Sharp was driving his SUV in heavy fog and went through a stop sign at the crossing where he crashed into the side of the train. The railroad crossing had no flashing light or stop arm.

First aid, including CPR, was performed by citizens at the scene and by medical personnel, however, Sharp was pronounced dead at the scene.
