Wings North To Host Benefit For Woman Shot By Ex-Husband
A benefit has been scheduled for the woman who was shot in the chest by her ex-husband in Pine County back in early December. 55-year old Dawn Christen is still recovering from that wound, but hopes to be at the benefit at Wings North in Pine City on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 2pm to 8pm. Christen may still need more surgery, but she has been recovering since her ex-husband, 55-year old Daniel Shilts shot her in the chest before fatally turning the gun on himself. The benefit will be a spaghetti dinner from 2pm until 5:30, and will cost $10.00 per person. A silent auction will also take place, and donations for that auction can be left off at the East Central Veterinarians in Mora or Cambridge. A Fund has been set for Christen at Wells Fargo in Cambridge as well.
On the night Christen was shot, she sent a text message to a neighbor, who called authorities. Upon arrival police found her barricaded in a bathroom with a gunshot wound to the chest. Her ex-husband, Shilts, had broken in a rear door before she had arrived home that night. According to authorities, Shilts then confronted Christen, shot her in the chest, and stayed in the house. For two hours police negotiated with Shilts in the living room before he pulled the trigger, taking his own life.
