Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon Postponed
The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon has been postponed due to poor snow conditions. Instead of the end of January, the 2013 Beargrease will now begin in March.
The new start date is March 10. The decision was made on Monday night as too much rain falling in the area ruined the trail. Officals in charge of the race told the Associated Press that they are hoping for enough snow for new date.
The board is saying they will remain in constant communication with the mushing teams, so they can make other travel plans if they’re coming from out of town.
The Beargrease is looking to run for the 29th time. John Beargrease was born 1858 and is best remembered as the winter mail carrier between Two Harbors, Minnesota and Grand Marais, Minnesota during the last two decades of the nineteenth century. He used sled dogs and a row boat and a dog sled to deliver the mail. His legacy is celebrated in the annual 411-mile John Beargrease Dog Sled Race between Duluth and Grand Portage.
