Boys HS Hockey: Mustangs @ Blizzard
On Tuesday night the WSFLG Blizzard faced off against the Mora Mustangs and won with a very heated and entertaining game 6-5.
The Blizz led 2-1 after the first period and came out and added
two more in the first two minutes of the second period to open up a 4-1 lead. It looked like WSFLG was on the way to routing the Mustangs, but Derek Graves makes a quick move on a breakaway late in the second to bring it to 4-2 after two periods.
Thirteen seconds into the third period, Hunter Wedin’s slapshot was tipped in by Troy Jones to give Mora a powerplay goal and that makes it 4-3. Just 30 seconds later, Derek Graves cought a rebound and slipped it past WSFLG goalie Brandon Roufs for his second goal,
tying the game at 4-4. Halfway through the third period, Graves completed the Hat Trick and gave Mora-Hinkley-Finlayson a 5-4 advantage with 7:28 remaining in the game. The Mustangs had all the momentum, but the Blizz kept battling.
Later in the third period, Blizz senior defenseman Dakota Linke sent a great feed for Alex Hopkins who split the Mora defense and beat
Tanner Baxley to tie the game at 5-5.
With exactly one minute to go, Bryce Ryan fed his brother Brandon Ryan, who made a move across the Mora blueline, and the latter Ryan hit Matt Larson with a perfect pass across the slot; Larson buried it, making it 6-5 and sealing the win for the WSFLG Blizz.
Mora-Hinkley-Finlayson falls back to .500 on the year at 5-5-0, while WSFLG improves to 5-7-1 overall. Mora is at home versus Legacy Christian on Thursday Night at the Mora Civic Center. WSFLG will take on the Pine City-Rush Dragons at 7pm Thursday night in Grantsburg.
