The Itasca County Sheriff’s Dept. is reporting that a man was found dead on Saturday morning, December 29 due to an apparent snowmobile accident.

WDIO reports that a woman called the Sheriff’s Dept. saying that her husband had went out snowmobiling by himself on Friday night, and she had not had contact with him since 9 P.M. that night.

Sheriff’s Deputies and Search and Rescue responded to the Bigfork area where the snowmobiler was from and began preparing for a search for the male party reported missing.

Just before noon, Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a call that a male party was found lying on the Bigfork River next to a snowmobile and was believed to be deceased.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Bigfork River in Liberty Township in Northern Itasca County and confirmed that the male party found was that of the missing man.

The victim is identified as 38 year old Daniel Hollinday from Bigfork. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation at the scene indicated that the snowmobile hit a large rock on the shore of the river and that Hollinday was thrown from the snowmobile into some smaller rocks on the shoreline.
