Bayfield Mom Charged With Felonies After July Accident Killed Daughter
A Bayfield woman was charged with four felonies after a fatal crash this summer near Washburn that killed her two-year-old daughter. 23-year-old Chelsea Cadotte faces one felony count of second-degree reckless homicide and three felony charges for first-degree reckless injury.
Back in July, deputies said Cadotte was speeding southbound on Highway 13 with her three children and 15-year-old sister. Officials said she was distracted by a child in the backseat which caused her to swerve and roll several times into the ditch. All four, young passengers were ejected from the vehicle and were not wearing seat belts.
Cadotte’s daughter Mariah was killed in the crash and the three other passengers suffered life-threatening injuries. Cadotte’s other daughter, four-year-old Miley, is still in a coma. Cadotte was cited multiple times before the crash for not belting her children while in the car.
Alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash at this time. The use of drugs is still under investigation because Cadotte was taken to the hospital after the crash where she received medication which complicated the toxicology report.
