Bayfield County Reports Suicide After Traffic Stop

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 at 7:06 am

The Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office says a wanted man shot and killed himself during a traffic stop Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly after noon on U.S. Highway 2 near State Highway 137.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that a deputy stopped a car for a traffic violation, had a conversation with the driver, and took the driver’s license back to the squad car to check the license status.

Upon learning that there was an apprehension request or warrant for the driver, the deputy returned to the vehicle and tried to take him into custody. A news release from the sheriff’s office says the driver refused to exit from his vehicle and began reaching for something near the driver’s seat. The sheriff’s office says the man shot himself in the head while the deputy moved to a defensive position.

The deputy and paramedics attempted CPR, but WDIO reports the driver was pronounced dead at the Ashland hospital.

The names of those involved are not being released pending an investigation and notification of family.
