A sergeant with the Minneapolis Police Department turned himself in to the Anoka County Jail after being accused of assaulting a man at an Andover bar.

Sgt. David Clifford is being held on charges of first-degree and third-degree assault. According to KMSP-news, at about 7pm on Saturday at Tanners, Clifford punched a man and knocked him unconscious. The man’s head hit the concrete when he fell and he was rushed to the nearest hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for bleeding on his brain.

With at least ten witnesses on the patio, investigators quickly learned the suspect was possibly a Minneapolis police officer. They alerted the Minneapolis Police Department and went to the suspect’s house, but did not find him.

Clifford turned himself in on Sunday with his lawyer at his side.

The victim, Brian Vander Lee was on life support Sunday after two brain surgeries.
