Large Fire Burning Near Ely

Friday, May 18th, 2012 at 1:18 pm

The fire danger in both our Wisconsin and Minnesota listening areas has been nearly unparalleled so far this spring with dangerously dry conditions and a tremendous amount of downed timber. Fortunately no major fires have broken out so far in East Central Minnesota or Northwest Wisconsin, but firefighters in Northern Minnesota haven’t been so lucky. Crews continue fighting a 216-acre wildfire south of Ely.

The U.S. Forest Service held a public briefing meeting on Thursday night at Vermilion Community College in Ely. They said an incident command team will take over the fight on Friday and were being briefed Thursday night. Windy conditions today haven’t made things any easier.

U.S Forest Officials in Ely have lifted a previously-called evacuation order for about 250 residents on the southeast side of town, but said they’re not out of the woods yet as some evacuations may still be needed. We’ll keep you posted.
