On Thursday, at 12:56 a.m., the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash on North Williams Road in the Town of Wood River. This area is approximately two miles east of the Village of Grantsburg, Wisconsin.

According to Chief Deputy Scott M. Burns, upon arrival, deputies discovered a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am that appeared to have been traveling southbound on North Williams Road when it left the roadway and overturned, landing in a wooded area. The driver, Tessa M. Leffelman, 18, of Grantsburg, was pronounced dead at the scene by Burnett County Medical Examiner Mike Maloney. Leffelman was the only occupant of the vehicle. The cause of this crash remains under investigation; but preliminary investigation indicates that excessive speed may have been a contributing factor. Leffelman was a senior at Grantsburg High School.

Also responding to the crash were Grantsburg Police, North Memorial Ambulance, Grantsburg Fire Department, and Burnett County Law Enforcement Chaplains.

Investigation and crash reconstruction continues by the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office.

No further details are being released at this time.
