Two Small Children Rescued From Barron County Swamp

A bizarre rescue story happened in Barron county over the weekend.

On Saturday, the Barron County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a report of two young children, without shoes, playing in the roadway near a marshy wooded area. The caller estimated the children were around two or three years of age.

Upon arrival and after searching the area without locating the children, Rice Lake Police began searching the wetlands near a lake.

WQOW reports that when the officer reached the marsh, she immediately sank in the mud to the top of her boots and feared that the children may have also wandered into the area. Fortunately minutes later, the officer heard the children and found two boys stuck in the mud near the lake.

A citizen aided the officer in the rescue and fortunately although the young boys were scared, wet and shivering, both children were unharmed. It was later determined they had snuck away from their babysitter and wandered off.

The incident has been referred to the Department of Health and Human Services for follow-up.
