Two Pine City Students Advance To State Speech Competition

Fifteen Dragon Speech Competitors traveled to Milaca High School on Saturday, April 14th to compete in the Section 5A tournament. This section tournament is a combination of three sub sections within the 5A region and boasts the best speakers within the 23 schools in the 5A section.

Pine City will have two representatives at the Class A State Tournament on Friday, April 20th at Chanhassen High School; Lauren Funkhouser (junior) in poetry and Renee Schminkey (senior) in creative expression. This is Funkhouser’s first time qualifying for the state tournament. Her selection is titled “Sean Bell”. Schminkey will be making her return to the state tournament in the category of creative expression. Her piece is titled “You’re Not Actually Funny”.

Pine City had seven students qualify into the final round of the Section tournament for their chance to compete at State. Taylen Pearson placed 8th in informative, Ashlee Martini placed 7th in storytelling, Ben Miche placed 6th in discussion along with Allison Skluazeck in extemporanous reading, and Cody Tchida placed 5th in great speeches.
