The following statement has been released by Paul Jackson, the Athletic/Activities Director at Pine City High School regarding the future of the Pine City / Rush City Dragons boys hockey team:

“Over the last two months, the RC, HF, Mora, and PC school districts have been involved in an ongoing discussion into forming a hockey cooperative to address concerns of both safety and participation of the current hockey programs based in Mora and Pine City. The research done during that period indicated a need for serious consideration based on the participation levels in the two hockey programs both at the high school levels and the youth levels. The Pine City School District has made the decision to continue with our current hockey program. Adjustments in scheduling are being considered based on the low participation base that may impact both the JV and varsity teams. The major concerns of school district are that the kids are able to participate safely and that student-athletes compete at the appropriate level whether that be at the varsity level, JV level, or bantam level. Pine City Youth Hockey is actively working on a plan to improve both the skill base of athletes as well as the participation levels. The community response overall has been in support of playing ‘Dragon Hockey.’¬†As we move forward, we ask the community to be patient and supportive as the ongoing challenges that a recovering hockey program will surely face.” – Paul Jackson
