Gophers Advance To NIT Championship Game

The Minnesota Golden Gophers continue to play their best basketball of the season as the NIT Tournament continued on Tuesday night.

The short-handed Gophers improved to 3-3 in overtime games this season, beating Washington 68-67 in the NIT semifinals behind 20 points from freshman Andre Hollins.

Hollins scored five of Minnesota’s seven points in OT. With the shot clock winding down and the Gophers holding to a one-point lead in the final minute, Hollins banked in an off-balance shot to put Minnesota up 68-65.

The sixth-seeded Golden Gophers (23-14) will face #3 seed Stanford in Thursday night’s championship game at Madison Square Garden. The Cardinal beat Massachusetts 74-64 in the first semifinal.

Rodney Williams narrowly missed out on his fifth consecutive 20-point performance, he was second on the team in scoring with 18.

It’s been a fun NIT for gophers fans, but this run only reinforces how disappointing the season actually was. The team clearly played below its potential for much of the year.
