Morneau To DH More This Year?
If you’ve been enjoying our grapefruit league broadcasts of the Twins this spring you’ve probably noticed that Justin Morneau isn’t playing much first base, instead he’s DH-ing in the Twins lineup. This offseason Twins general manager Terry Ryan was adamant that if Justin Morneau was healthy enough to play, he was healthy enough to play first base. Things could be changing.
With just over one week left in spring training, Morneau hasn’t played first base since March 13. But as the designated hitter, his swing seems to be rounding into shape. After having two homers on Saturday, Morneau ripped a double to deep center field on Monday.
Doctors have told Morneau that he is more vulnerable to concussion symptoms when he is worn out. By eliminating first base, Morneau lessens the wear and tear on his body. It could be a sign of things to come for Morneau, who the club desperately needs to return to his MVP form if they hope to have a better season than last year.
