Local Wrestlers Compete At State
Over the weekend the State Wrestling tournament happened down in St. Paul at the XCel Energy center. Seveal local wrestlers competed in individual competition with the hopes of becoming a State Champion. While none quite got to that level, they all represented their teams and communities with tremendous effort and pride.
Mora’s junior Cody LaFromboise finished fourth at 160 lbs in Class 2A. LaFromboise went 3-2 over the two day tournament losing 10-7 in the third place match to Foley’s Taylor Lewendowski. Mora senior Brent Nelson had a strong showing as well, winning four total matches to take fifth at 145 in Class 2A. The Mustangs also had Sam Lawrence qualify for state at 195 and narrowly missed out on a team appearance in the tournament on Thursday when they placed second at Sections the week before.
The Hinckley-Finlayson / Pine City / East Central Jaguars also had three wrestlers competing in individuals at state. Kyle Opsahl had the best finish in the 126 lb weight class losing in the fifth place match and finishing 2-3 on the weekend after winning his first two matches. Both Damon Schwartz and David Lange made appearances at state but neither won a match.
Similarly, Ogilvie’s Jake Hickerson made State in Class A at 126 lbs. Hickerson was the only Lion to compete in St. Paul this weekend, and went 0-2 after an awesome season.
