New Minnesota District Maps Released, Congressional Dist. 8 Largely Unchanged

Minnesota state Redistricting maps came out this afternoon, and while a thorough examination of the maps continues, most things in the listening area will remain the same. WDIO reports U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack still lives within northeastern Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District under new maps released today.

The maps, put out by a panel appointed by the state Supreme Court, show Cravaack’s home in Chisago County is still within the 8th Congressional District. Earlier proposals by both Democrats and Republicans would have removed Chisago County from the district.

In the end, the court panel’s map for the 8th District is almost unchanged from the last map. Only a small portion of Beltrami County was added.

Redistricting is conducted once every 10 years to reflect population shifts within congressional and legislative districts. The Supreme court took over the once-per-decade redistricting process after Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and the Republican-controlled Legislature failed to agree on new political maps.
