Authorities are investigating after a 12-year old girl dies from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the Rusk County Sheriff’s Department, at around 7am on Sunday, deputies got a call to a home in southern Rusk County for a report that the caller’s granddaughter had shot herself.

When authorities got to the scene, they found the girl, Payton Ruth Ann Richardson, had passed away. According to Rusk County Sheriff David Kaminski, Richardson was staying with her grandparents for the weekend.

The sheriff said the gun was a pistol registered to the grandfather. Investigators also said that while it was stored in a secure location, it was not locked up.

Kaminski told WEAU-News, “This was a total shock to the grandparents and everybody that’s known her. This was way out of the ordinary for her.” He also went on to say, “She was very safe with the weapons and knew how to use the weapons. So this is something that was not accidental.”

The incident is still under investigation.

As a mother I can not imagine what a loss this would be. My heart goes out to the family. What a terrible terrible loss of life, 12 years old?! She had everything ahead of her. Awe, so sad.
