Sturgeon-Spearing Season Off To Slow Start

Monday, February 13th, 2012 at 6:56 am

The mild winter continues to take it’s toll on the region.

The start of the sturgeon-spearing season is off too a slow start on Lake Winnebago this year because of poor ice conditions and low water clarity. There were 210 sturgeon registered on Saturday. 39 of those were on Lake Winnebago. The other 171 were on other lakes. The 210 total is less than half the 442 sturgeon taken on last year’s opening day.

Even with a record amount of licenses sold for the season, many people stayed away because of the ice conditions.
