Young Girl Stabbed In Babbit, Officer Shoots Stabbing Suspect
A wild scene developed last night in Babbit Minnesota, about two hours north of Duluth. Authorities have confirmed that a three-year-old girl was stabbed and later, police shot the man suspected of stabbing the little girl. Both are still alive, but the City of Babbitt is understandably in shock.
Police confirmed that around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, a neighbor called 9-1-1, and reported a disturbance on Ash Boulevard.
Police state that the suspect, who we believe is a 27-year old male, was babysitting the girl while the mother was at work. The suspect and the mother live together.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office told WDIO that upon arriving, the officer called for backup, because the suspect was armed with a knife.
Investigators said in a press release that the suspect brought the child outside of the home, and had the knife. Authorities say he confronted the officer, and that’s when the officer fired his duty weapon, shooting the suspect one time.
The suspect was then airlifted to Essentia-Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, but his condition remains unknown at this time. The girl is being treated at an Ely hospital, and is in stable condition, according to WDIO.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to help with the crime scene and investigation.
Authorities said they may release the names of the people on Wednesday.
The officer involved is on paid leave, which is standard procedure.
