Pine Master Gardeners Recognized For 2784 Hours Of Volunteer Service in 2011
In 2011 forty-four University of Minnesota Extension Pine County Master Gardeners volunteered 2784 hours and put in 478 education hours. They were recognized at their annual awards dinner held at the Audubon Center of the Northwoods near Sandstone on January 10th. They also enjoyed an informative raptor demonstration presented by Audubon Center staff.
Ten year certificates were presented by president Clarissa Ellis-Prudhomme to Donna Martin, Hinckley; Sue Sloper, Willow River and Tom Rolf, Pine City. Officers elected for 2012 will be president – Charles Mans, Hinckley; vice president – Barbara Videen, Pine City; secretary – Kara Nelson, Askov and treasurer – Tom Rolf, Pine City.
The Pine County Extension Master Gardener projects in 2011 included: hosting 220 people at their March Horticulture Day; managing the Pine City Community Garden; answering gardener questions at the Sandstone and Pine City Farmers Markets; creating a square foot gardening educational booth at the Pine County Fair; conducting after school Junior Master Gardener training; writing newspaper columns and other activities.
For 2012 the master gardeners are planning their 10th Annual Pine County Master Gardener Horticulture Day on Saturday, March 24th from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pine City High School, a May plant sale, June 19th Home Canning Basics Workshops from 2-4 p.m. at Pine City High School and 7-9 p.m. at the Hinckley High School.
