Fishermen Stranded On Lake Mille Lacs

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 at 8:35 am

The Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that a group of more than ten fisherman became stranded on Lake Mille Lacs near the small town of Garrison around 7pm Wednesday night.

Authorities aren’t sure how the fisherman got onto the ice, or exactly what happened to strand the men. Crews used a State Patrol hovercraft to search for all of the members of the party. Aitkin County said so far, of the rescued, no one was injured.

At least ten were rescued but officials say that number could be higher.

Aitkin County said high winds are likely to blame for the accident, causing ice ridges to break away. They’re warning the public that the lake is not safe to be on. Aitkin, Mille Lacs and Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Departments all responded.

As a precautionary measure, authorities also ran a chopper back and forth overhead to be sure no one was left out on the lake.
