Train Hits Stalled Vehicle On Tracks Near Cloquet

Monday, November 21st, 2011 at 7:48 am

St. Louis County authorities say a motorist escaped serious injury when her vehicle stalled on train tracks as a locomotive was approaching.

The sheriff’s office responded northwest of Cloquet on Saturday afternoon to a railroad crossing near Brookston. Deputies say 51-year-old Kelly Holte of Culver was trying to cross the tracks when her truck stalled.

At the same time, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was approaching the crossing at about 40 mph. The locomotive slammed into the rear passenger side of the truck, pushing it into a ditch.

WDIO reports that Holte was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The truck sustained heavy damage.

A train hitting a vehicle would certainly cause heavy damage. Trains take more than a mile to stop so it’s not like it could’ve stopped for the truck stalled on the tracks. Trains do have the right of way.
