CIMPC Bluejackets Win Opener Against Duluth
The Cambridge Isanti Mora Pine City Bluejackets girls hockey team got their season underway over the weekend with an impressive win in Duluth. The team was without it’s head coach Jeff McCann for this game, instead taking the reigns was assistant coach, Dean Armstrong. The Bluejackets defeated the Duluth Northern Stars 7-6 in an overtime thriller. Coach Armstrong categorized it as “a night to remember” and said he was very proud of the way the girls played with such determination and finished so strong.
The team’s stamina and fortitude was tested as most of the girls played 4 periods of hockey, including overtime, and overcame a two-goal deficit twice to win. The Bluejackets finished by scoring 3 straight goals to take the lead for the first time when it counted the most – in overtime. Goalie AJ Smith played well after overcoming a shaky start, making some key saves, including stopping a Duluth breakaway late in the game.
For the Bluejackets, Steph Cannon, Megan Erickson and Kaity Ripp each scored two goals – Cannon the game winner at the 5:32 mark in overtime. CIMPC is back on the ice again tomorrow night against Chisago Lakes area.
