Former Wisconsin Senator Kanvas Won’t Run For Senate

Former Wisconsin state senator Ted Kanavas says he won’t run for the states U.S. Senate seat in 2012.

Of course, it’s the seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Herb Kohl.

In an e-mail to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Kanvas said it would be difficult to raise the money needed to win with so many candidates.

Kanavas told the paper that if former governor Tommy Thompson enters the race, he would tie up many resources. He says privately many donors indicated they would not support anyone else out of respect for Thompson’s 45-year political legacy.

Former Republican congressman Mark Neumann and Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin have officially entered the race.

Earlier this month Thompson said he filed documents to incorporate his Senate campaign committee, allowing him to raise money and build the organization. But he hasn’t made any formal announcements.
