NOTE: The victim in this case has now passed away as the result of the injuries he suffered.
On September 17, 2011, at approximately 10:22 p.m., the Pine County Sheriff’s Office received a call of an assault and dispatched officers to a residence on Grouse Trail in Hinckley, MN.
When officers arrived they saw the victim laying in a driveway being held by his wife. The victim was unconscious and was bleeding from his nose and mouth. The officers also observed the victim to have a tennis ball size lump on the back of his head and noted that his respirations were indicative of someone who suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Officers made contact with an individual, Keith Defoe, in the garage of the residence. Mr. Defoe admitted to pushing the victim. Witnesses stated that Mr. Defoe and the victim had been arguing and the witness then heard a “loud pop” and saw the victim fall to the ground.
Officers placed Keith Leon Defoe under arrest for the charges of 1st Degree Assault and 2nd Degree Assault. His bail has been set at $1,000,000 with conditions and $500,000 without conditions.
The victim was airlifted to Essentia Health in Duluth and is in very critical condition.
This case remains under investigation by the Mille Lacs Tribal Police Department and the Pine County Sheriff’s Office.
