The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department says a fatal three- vehicle crash happened on Friday around 2:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 10 near Strum, just south of Eau Claire. An SUV driven by 66-year-old Ronald P. Harper of Strum was eastbound when it was hit from behind by a semi, driven by 31-year-old Jason R. Kluender of Stevens Point.

When the SUV got hit, it traveled across the centerline, hitting a westbound pick-up, driven by 40-year-old John D. Lawson of Eleva. After the pick-up was hit, it went off the roadway onto the shoulder and rolled several times. Lawson was thrown from the truck. When the pick-up stopped rolling, it started on fire. Lawson was taken to an Eau Claire hospital where he was pronounced dead. The drivers of the SUV and semi did not have any injuries. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

The crash is still under investigation.
