Small Plane Crashes Into Polk County Lake

Friday, September 9th, 2011 at 11:28 am

Deputies in Polk County are saying that a small plane crashed in the county on Thursday morning. The incident happened between Centuria and Balsam Lake around 10:15 a.m. when the plane, described as a Piper Suber Cub PA18 was attempting to land on Long Lake.

The plane was fitted with floats for a water landing, but apparently the aircraft overturned, and the plane went into the water upside down. Deputies say that 54-year old Phillip Mattison of Forest Lake was able to free himself from the airplane and some nearby fishermen came to his aid.

There were no passengers on the plane and the Sheriff’s office reports that Mattison was treated on the scene for minor injuries.

It is believed that Mattison was in the Minong area to practice water landings on Long Lake.

The crash remains under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
